The most important part of empowerment—that which creates the most power—is the realization that our beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all within our control. Understanding this gives people a sense of internal power, which leads to an improved sense of self-worth and self-confidence. These, in turn, sustain people as they practice behaviors that enable them to maintain relationships, hold jobs, and function at peak capability.

Here’s another way to look at the dynamics of empowerment. Most people would agree that an event (E) plus our reaction (R) to that event leads to an outcome (O):5
